Choosing tennis balls
Pressurised vs pressureless: pressurised balls feel lively and responsive but lose bounce once the tube is opened — ideal for matches. Pressureless balls last far longer and are perfect for practice, ball machines and club baskets. Court surface: regular-duty balls suit indoor and clay courts; extra-duty felt is built to last on abrasive hard courts. Junior balls: red (stage 3), orange (stage 2) and green (stage 1) balls play slower and lower for developing players, in line with the LTA youth pathway.
Frequently asked questions about tennis balls
What is the difference between pressurised and pressureless tennis balls?
Pressurised balls have a hollow core filled with pressurised air, giving a lively, responsive bounce — but they go flat within a few weeks of opening the tube. Pressureless balls get their bounce from a solid, thicker rubber core, so they last much longer and are ideal for practice and ball machines, though they feel slightly heavier at first.
What are stage 1, 2 and 3 (red, orange, green) tennis balls?
These are slower, lower-bouncing balls for junior development, following the LTA and ITF youth pathway. Red (stage 3) balls are the slowest for the youngest players on mini courts, orange (stage 2) are a step up, and green (stage 1) balls are close to full pace for players ready to move to a full court.
How many tennis balls come in a tube or case?
Most tubes contain 3 or 4 balls. For clubs, coaches and schools we supply bulk cases — typically 18 tubes (72 balls) or more — at trade-friendly pricing. Get in touch for volume requirements.
Which tennis ball is best for hard courts?
Choose an extra-duty felt ball such as Dunlop ATP or Wilson US Open. The denser woven felt resists the abrasion of hard courts and lasts longer than regular-duty balls, which are better suited to clay and indoor surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Pressurised balls have internal air pressure that gives a lively bounce and the feel preferred for matches, but they go flat over a few weeks once opened. Pressureless balls rely on the rubber shell, so they last much longer and suit practice, ball machines and clubs.
Most competitive and club matches use pressurised balls for their bounce and feel. Use a fresh can for matches, and keep older or pressureless balls for practice.
Once opened, a can of pressurised balls typically stays at its best for a few sessions before the bounce drops. Pressureless balls last much longer, though their bounce can feel firmer.
