Step 1 of 3

1. What's your level?

How to choose a badminton racket

Four things shape how a racket plays. Once you know what each does, picking the right one gets much easier.

FeatureOptionsWhat it changes
BalanceHead-heavy / Even / Head-lightHead-heavy adds smash power; head-light is faster for defence and net play; even balance does a bit of both.
Weight3U (heavier) to 5U (lighter)Lighter frames (4U/5U) are easier to manoeuvre; heavier frames (3U) add stability and power.
Shaft flexFlexible / Medium / StiffFlexible suits slower swings and beginners; stiff gives control for fast, advanced swings.
Grip sizeG4 (larger) to G6 (smaller)Affects comfort and control; you can build up a smaller grip with an overgrip.

Looking after your racket

  • Restring regularly — a rough guide is to restring as many times a year as you play per week, or whenever the string feels dead or breaks.
  • Refresh your grip or add an overgrip when it loses tack, for a secure hold.
  • Store your racket in a cover, away from extreme heat or cold, to protect the frame and string tension.

Not sure? Our team can help in person at our Birmingham and Milton Keynes stores, and every racket comes with free expert restringing.
