Frequently asked questions about badminton shoes
Can I wear running shoes for badminton?
No — running shoes are built for forward motion with raised, cushioned heels that roll on quick sideways movements and risk ankle injury. Badminton shoes have a flat, non-marking gum sole, a low centre of gravity and reinforced sides for the sport's constant lunges and direction changes.
What makes a good badminton shoe?
Look for a non-marking gum rubber outsole for grip on indoor courts, lateral support to resist rolling, responsive cushioning for repeated lunges, and a snug locked-in fit. Lighter shoes aid speed; more cushioned, durable models suit heavier players and high-mileage club nights.
How should badminton shoes fit?
Snug with a locked-in heel and about a thumb's width at the toe. A secure fit stops your foot sliding during lunges. Most players take their normal trainer size, but if you are between sizes and play hard, a snugger fit gives better court feel.
Do badminton shoes work for other indoor sports?
Yes — the non-marking gum sole and lateral support also suit squash, indoor netball and general indoor court use. They are not suitable for outdoor or running use, which wears the gum sole quickly.
