Choosing your first — or next — padel racket comes down to four things: shape, weight, balance and core. This guide from the Central Sports team explains each one in plain English so you can buy with confidence. When you're ready, browse all padel rackets or talk to our experts in store at Coventry, Birmingham or Milton Keynes.
1. Racket shape: round, teardrop or diamond
Round rackets have a low balance point, the largest sweet spot and the most control — the best choice for beginners and defensive players. Teardrop rackets balance power and control with a medium sweet spot — the all-rounder for intermediate-to-advanced players. Diamond rackets are top-heavy with maximum power but a smaller sweet spot — for advanced attackers with grooved technique. Most players should start round, progress to teardrop, then consider diamond.
2. Weight
Padel rackets typically weigh 350–385g. Lighter rackets (355–365g) are easier to manoeuvre and gentler on the arm — ideal for beginners, juniors and players prone to elbow strain. Heavier rackets (370g+) deliver more power but demand more strength and better technique. As a rule, women and beginners suit the lighter end; strong, advanced players suit the heavier end.
3. Balance
Balance describes where the weight sits. Low balance = head-light, faster reactions, more control (great for net play and defence). High balance = head-heavy, more power on the smash but slower to manoeuvre. Round rackets are usually low-balance; diamond rackets high-balance; teardrops sit in between.
4. Core and surface material
The core is usually EVA foam. Soft EVA is comfortable, forgiving and easier on the arm — best for beginners and control players. Hard EVA returns more power and is favoured by advanced players. The surface is typically fibreglass (softer, more forgiving, more affordable) or carbon fibre / 3K–18K weave (stiffer, more power and spin, more durable, higher price).
