Yonex Expert 6 Racket Bag 2026 in white, a thermal-lined tennis bag

Best Tennis Bags UK 2026: Yonex, Wilson, Head & Babolat Compared

Which tennis bag should you buy? We compare 3, 6, 9 and 12 racket bags, backpacks and thermal protection across Yonex, Wilson, Head and Babolat, with our in-stock top picks.

Quick answer: Most club players are best served by a 6-racket tennis bag: room for two or three rackets, shoes, a towel and balls, without the bulk. Pick a 9 or 12-racket bag if you play matches or tournaments and carry spares, and a backpack if you travel light with one or two rackets. Look for a thermal-lined racket compartment and a separate shoe pocket.

A tennis bag does two jobs: it keeps your rackets and strings away from heat and knocks, and it gets your kit to court in one go. We play and string rackets every week across our Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Cardiff and Hereford stores, and the same questions come up at the counter every time. How big? Which brand? Is thermal lining worth it? Here is how the Yonex, Wilson, Head and Babolat ranges compare, with the bags we actually have in stock.

Tennis bag sizes explained: 3, 6, 9 and 12 racket bags

Racket counts on tennis bags are a maximum, not a recommendation. A bag rated for six rackets will hold six frames with little else, so most players buy one size up from the number of rackets they own. If you want a fuller breakdown of dimensions, our tennis bag size guide goes into more detail.

Bag type Realistic load Best for Shop
3 racket bag 1 to 2 rackets, balls, small towel Juniors, casual and social players Club bags
Backpack 1 to 2 rackets, shoes or clothes, bottle Commuters, cyclists, lessons Backpacks
6 racket bag 2 to 3 rackets, shoes, change of kit Most club and league players 6 racket bags
9 racket bag 3 to 5 rackets, shoes, full kit Match players, coaches, juniors on the county circuit 9 racket bags
12 racket bag 4 to 6 rackets plus everything else Tournament players and coaches 12 racket bags
Tournament / duffle bag Varies, usually large main compartments Long match days and travel Tournament bags

How many rackets do you really need to carry?

If you play once or twice a week socially, one racket and a spare overgrip is fine, and a backpack or 3-racket bag does the job. Once you play league matches, carry at least two rackets strung the same way, because a broken string mid-set otherwise ends your match. Tournament players usually carry three or more, often at slightly different tensions for changing conditions. Count your rackets, add space for shoes and a change of clothes, and that tells you whether you need a 6, 9 or 12. Our tennis kit bag checklist covers what else is worth packing.

Is thermal protection in a tennis bag worth it?

Yes, if you ever leave your bag in a car. Heat speeds up tension loss in strings, and cold makes them feel dead. Thermal-lined compartments (Yonex call it Thermo Guard, Head call it CCT+ Climate Control Technology, Wilson use Thermoguard) slow that down. It will not stop strings ageing, so you still need to restring regularly (see how often to restring a tennis racket), but it protects the job you paid for.

Wilson tennis bags: Super Tour, Tour and Defyer

Wilson tennis bags split into three main families. Super Tour is the tour-level range, with 6, 9 and 15 pack bags and two main compartments on the larger sizes. Tour sits just below it in 6 and 12 pack sizes plus a backpack, with Thermoguard-lined compartments, and is a sensible choice for most league players. Defyer is the newest family, styled to match the Defyer rackets, in 9 and 15 pack sizes plus a small duffel; we wrote more about it in our Wilson Defyer bags post. Wilson also produce racket-matched bags, such as the Blade V10 and Clash V3, if you like your bag to match your frame.

Head and Babolat tennis bags

Head tennis bags centre on the Tour range. The Tour Racket Bag L holds up to 9 rackets across two main compartments, with CCT+ climate control in one of them and a shoe compartment, and the Tour Backpack 25L suits players who carry one or two frames. Babolat tennis bags follow their racket lines: the Pure Aero 2026 range includes the RH12 (up to 12 rackets, thermal lining, ventilated shoe compartment) and a Pure Aero backpack that holds two rackets. The Court M and Court L bags are simpler, cheaper options in 6 and 9 racket sizes.

Backpack or racket bag?

A tennis backpack is the better choice if you walk, cycle or take public transport to court and only carry one or two rackets. Racket bags win once you carry shoes, a change of kit and more than two frames, because the weight is spread across a longer bag and the rackets sit in a protected compartment rather than poking out of the top.

FAQs

What size tennis bag do I need?

Buy one size up from the number of rackets you carry. One or two rackets: a backpack or 3-racket bag. Two or three rackets plus shoes: a 6-racket bag. Three to five rackets or a coach's kit: a 9 or 12-racket bag.

Can I use a Yonex badminton bag for tennis?

Yes. Yonex bags are designed for racket sports generally, and the Expert, Pro, Active and Team ranges are used by tennis and badminton players alike. Tennis rackets are longer and wider, so a tennis player will fit fewer frames in than the badminton count suggests.

Do tennis bags protect strings from heat?

Bags with thermal lining, such as Yonex Thermo Guard, Head CCT+ and Wilson Thermoguard, slow heat and cold from reaching your rackets. They help keep string tension stable, but you should still avoid leaving rackets in a hot car for long periods.

Which is the best tennis bag brand?

There is no single best brand. Yonex has the widest choice of sizes and price points, Wilson and Babolat are good if you want a bag matched to your racket, and Head's Tour range is strong value. Choose on size, thermal protection and comfort first.
