Step 1 of 3
How to choose a pickleball paddle
Paddles vary by face material, core, shape and weight. Match them to your level and the way you like to play.
| Face | Feel |
|---|---|
| Graphite / carbon | Control and touch; popular with most players |
| Composite / fibreglass | More power and pop |
| Wood | Cheap and heavy; fine as a starter |
| Shape | Best for |
|---|---|
| Standard | Balanced control and power |
| Elongated | Reach and power, smaller sweet spot |
| Wide body | Bigger sweet spot and control |
Weight
Lighter paddles are easier to manoeuvre and kinder on the arm; heavier paddles add power and stability. Midweight suits most players.
Looking after your paddle
- Fit an edge guard to protect against court knocks.
- Wipe the face clean to keep its texture and grip on the ball.
- Avoid leaving it in a hot car, which can damage the core.
