Our beginner badminton rackets are picked for new and returning players: light, forgiving frames with a flexible shaft and an even or head-light balance, so the racket does more of the work while your technique develops. Every racket here is a genuine model from brands including Yonex and Apacs, and most can be strung to a lower, more forgiving tension in store.

How to choose a beginner badminton racket
Look for three things: a 4U or 5U weight (75–84g), a flexible or medium shaft, and a head-light or even balance. That combination is easier to swing, kinder on the shoulder and quicker in defence. Avoid stiff, head-heavy frames until you can generate racket-head speed comfortably. Not sure? Use our badminton racket finder, or see the 4U and 5U ranges. When you are ready to move up, browse intermediate badminton rackets.
Beginner badminton racket FAQs
What weight badminton racket is best for a beginner?
Most beginners do best with a 4U (80–84g) racket. A 5U (75–79g) suits juniors and players who want the lightest possible frame. Heavier 3U rackets are better left until your swing is more developed.
Should a beginner buy a flexible or stiff racket?
Flexible. A flexible shaft bends and releases during the swing, adding easy power for players who have not yet developed a fast wrist and forearm action.
What string tension should a beginner use?
Around 20–24 lbs. Lower tension gives a bigger sweet spot and more power from a slower swing. We can string any racket in store at the tension you choose.
Can I try a racket before I buy?
Yes. Visit our stores in Birmingham, Cardiff, Milton Keynes or Hereford to hold and try rackets with our team.
