Yonex 3D Power Carbon Plate: How the Aerus GT's Carbon Works

Yonex has been working with carbon for decades in its rackets. Here's how the 3D Power Carbon plate in the Carbon Cruise Aerus GT works.

Long before carbon plates arrived in running shoes, Yonex was building badminton and tennis rackets from graphite. That experience is the backbone of the Carbon Cruise range, and the 3D Power Carbon plate in the new Aerus GT is the most speed-focused version yet.

What a carbon plate does

A carbon plate is a thin, stiff layer inside the midsole. It stops the shoe bending too much at the forefoot and helps channel the energy from your landing into the next stride. The result is a shoe that feels more propulsive and more stable at speed than foam alone.

What makes 3D Power Carbon different

Raised wings

Rather than a flat sheet, the plate has raised wings at the forefoot and midfoot. Yonex says these raised edges reduce side-to-side wobble on landing, so your foot stays centred over the plate instead of tipping off it.

Deeper wave ribs

Compared with the plate in the original Carbon Cruise Aerus, the GT's plate has deeper wave-shaped ribs. These add stiffness, which improves stability and propulsion at faster paces.

Moderate flex

Stiffer doesn't mean rigid. Yonex has tuned the plate with a moderate flex designed to reduce strain on the muscles, which makes it more forgiving than many aggressive race plates. Early testers in Japan said the shoe avoids the harsh, jolting feel some carbon shoes have.

Graphite Throttle: plate plus foam

The plate doesn't work alone. In the Aerus GT it's paired with Power Cushion REV cushioning, a combination Yonex calls Graphite Throttle (GT). The foam handles shock and rebound; the plate handles stability and push-off.

Is a carbon plate right for you?

  • Yes if you're doing tempo runs, intervals or racing and want more speed for the same effort.
  • Maybe not as your only shoe for slow, easy miles. Most runners keep a softer everyday trainer alongside a plated shoe.
