Yonex sells most of its popular rackets (Astrox, Nanoflare and Arcsaber) in up to four versions: Pro, Tour, Game and Play. They share a name and a look, but they are not the same racket. The factory, the graphite and the stiffness change at every step.
The short answer
- Pro: the top version. Highest-grade materials and the stiffest shaft. For advanced players with a fast, clean swing.
- Tour: closest to the Pro in feel and frame shape, slightly more forgiving and cheaper. For strong club and county players.
- Game: a mid-level version with a more flexible shaft. For improving club players.
- Play: the entry version, usually sold pre-strung. For beginners and social players.
What changes between versions
1. Materials
The Pro uses Yonex's top graphite and technologies. Each step down uses a simpler graphite blend. You feel it most in how solid the racket feels on a full smash.
2. Stiffness
Pro versions are the stiffest. Stiff shafts reward a fast, well-timed swing with control and precision. Game and Play versions flex more, which helps players with a slower swing get the shuttle to the back of the court.
3. Where it is made
Pro versions are made in Japan. The lower tiers are made in Yonex's other factories. This is one reason for the price gap.
4. Price
Expect the Pro to cost roughly two to three times the Play version of the same racket.
Which should you buy?
- Playing a few years, competing in leagues, fast swing: Pro or Tour.
- Playing weekly at club level and improving: Tour or Game.
- New to badminton or playing socially: Play.
A Pro racket is not automatically better for you. If your swing speed doesn't match the shaft, a stiffer racket can feel dead and tire your arm. Most club players play better with a Tour or Game.
