Pickleball is a fast-growing sport in the UK and dedicated pickleball shoes are still a relatively new category. For most UK pickleball players we recommend the Wilson Pickle Pro — the most widely-stocked dedicated pickleball shoe in the UK. Crossover players can use tennis shoes (for outdoor / hard court) or badminton shoes (for indoor / sports hall) effectively while the pickleball-specific market grows. This guide explains how to choose, what to look for, and what to use if you can’t find a pickleball-specific shoe in your size, written by the racket-fitting team at Central Sports.

Why pickleball shoes matter

Pickleball is played on a court the size of a badminton court (13.4m x 6.1m) but with much shorter rallies, more lateral movement at the non-volley zone (the “kitchen”), and frequent quick direction changes during dinks and drives. Most UK pickleball is played indoors on sports-hall floors (wooden or PVC), where badminton shoes are an excellent crossover. Outdoor pickleball (still rare in the UK but growing) is played on hard courts where tennis shoes work well.

Pickleball-specific shoes are tuned to the exact load profile of pickleball — less aggressive than singles tennis but more sustained than recreational badminton. The dedicated outsole pattern provides good multi-directional grip without the extreme stickiness of tennis hard-court soles, which can cause knee strain on the smaller pickleball court.

The key specs in a pickleball shoe

Outsole pattern

Pickleball outsoles use a modified herringbone or pivot pattern — less aggressive than tennis but grippier than running. The aim is multi-directional grip without locking the foot on quick pivots at the kitchen line.

Lateral stability

Constant side-steps at the kitchen and quick direction changes during third-shot drops put real load on the lateral chassis. Real pickleball shoes have reinforced side panels and a stiff midfoot shank that resist rolling.

Indoor vs outdoor outsole

Indoor pickleball shoes have gum-rubber or soft-rubber outsoles for sports-hall floors. Outdoor pickleball shoes have harder, abrasion-resistant rubber for outdoor hard courts. Some “all-surface” shoes work on both but compromise slightly on each.

Cushioning and feel

Pickleball impacts are moderate — less than tennis serving impacts, more constant than badminton rallies. Most pickleball shoes use standard EVA midsoles with brand-specific cushioning pods. The Wilson Pickle Pro uses Wilson’s OrthoLite insole tech.

Best pickleball shoes for UK players

Dedicated pickleball shoes

Best crossover from badminton (indoor pickleball)

If you play indoor pickleball and can’t find a pickleball-specific shoe, badminton shoes are an excellent crossover — same indoor surface, similar lateral demands.

  • Yonex Power Cushion 65Z3 — the all-rounder badminton shoe. Works exceptionally well for indoor pickleball.
  • Yonex Power Cushion Comfort Z3 Wide — wider last for UK feet.
  • Hundred Court Master — UK-popular value crossover option.
  • Victor A170 — wide-fit value crossover.

Best crossover from tennis (outdoor pickleball)

If you play outdoor pickleball on hard courts, tennis shoes work well — the outsole is built for the surface.

What about running shoes?

Don’t use them. Running shoes have no lateral stability and will roll on the constant side-steps and pivots that pickleball demands. The outsoles are also wrong — too stiff for safe court grip and the heel-stack is too high for sharp direction changes. Running shoes for pickleball cause ankle injuries; we see this in our store regularly.

Indoor vs outdoor: choosing the right shoe

For indoor sports-hall pickleball (most UK play)

Choose a badminton shoe or dedicated indoor pickleball shoe with gum-rubber outsole. Best picks: Wilson Pickle Pro, Yonex Power Cushion 65Z3, Hundred Court Master.

For outdoor hard-court pickleball

Choose a tennis shoe with all-court outsole. Best picks: Asics Gel Challenger 14, K-Swiss Defier RS, Yonex SHT Eclipsion 5.

For players who do both

The Wilson Pickle Pro works on both surfaces but compromises slightly on each. If you split time evenly between indoor and outdoor, the Pickle Pro is a reasonable single-shoe solution. If you play one much more often, choose surface-specific.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pickleball shoe in the UK?

The Wilson Pickle Pro is the most widely-stocked dedicated pickleball shoe in the UK and our top recommendation for players who want a pickleball-specific shoe. For indoor crossover, the Yonex Power Cushion 65Z3 badminton shoe works exceptionally well.

Can I use my badminton shoes for pickleball?

Yes — for indoor pickleball, badminton shoes are an excellent crossover. They have the right outsole for sports-hall floors, the right lateral stability, and the right cushioning profile. Yonex Power Cushion 65Z3, Hundred Court Master and Victor A170 are all good options.

Can I use my tennis shoes for pickleball?

Yes — for outdoor hard-court pickleball, tennis shoes are a natural fit. They have the right outsole for hard courts and the lateral support pickleball demands. For indoor sports-hall pickleball, tennis shoes work but badminton shoes are better suited to the surface.

Do pickleball-specific shoes really matter?

The dedicated pickleball shoe market is still small. The Wilson Pickle Pro is a competent shoe specifically engineered for pickleball but it doesn’t dramatically outperform a good badminton shoe (indoor) or tennis shoe (outdoor) crossover. The most important thing is to use a court shoe of some kind — not a running shoe.

How often should I replace pickleball shoes?

Regular players (2–3 sessions per week) replace every 6–12 months. The outsole and cushioning degrade gradually; replace when you notice the shoe feeling flat or new heel/knee discomfort.

Are there women’s pickleball shoes?

The Wilson Pickle Pro is currently primarily stocked in men’s sizing in the UK, but the crossover badminton and tennis options have full women’s ranges — Yonex Power Cushion 65Z3 Women’s, Asics Gel Challenger 14 Women’s, K-Swiss Defier RS Women’s.

What outsole do pickleball shoes use?

Indoor pickleball shoes use gum rubber for sports-hall grip (same as badminton). Outdoor pickleball shoes use harder abrasion-resistant rubber for hard courts (same as tennis). All-surface shoes compromise slightly on each.

Does Central Sports stock the Wilson Pickle Pro?

Yes — both current Wilson Pickle Pro colourways in stock for men’s sizing, plus the broader pickleball range including paddles, balls and accessories. Free advice from our team in store at Coventry, Birmingham and Milton Keynes.
